Roney caught the groove-bug
early in life when at age 3 he was exposed to secular artists in his parents’ collection such as Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic, and the Jackson Five, as well as Gospel icons such as James Cleveland, the Hawkins Family; and later on, Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin. At age 4 Roney was fascinated with the drums, which he playing throughout this childhood and into his teen years. He participated in Church choirs and after his first performance outside his home church at the East Texas Church Conference at age 12, the young prodigy was hooked.
As he continued to study music, Roney
became interested in construction melodies and harmonies. His natural progression as a musician brought him to piano lesions at 16, which prompted him to begin his career as a composer.
