Metanoia Awakenings
Avi Subban - Matonoia Awakenings DeepStitched is extremely excited to feature Avi Subban this week with his debut EP. We sat down with Avi to ask him the meaning behind the name of the EP and track selection. Here are his thoughts: DeepStitched: Most artists usually will do 2 to 4 tracks for an EP. Why 6 tracks? Why not split it into two eps? Avi: Lol, besides the reason that it shows my versatility? The name of the EP is Metanoia Awakenings which means a profound awakening to spiritual growth. All the songs in there represent stages of growth in myself and (in) my music. I decided to have a collective idea representing it instead of splitting them up. Now lets talk about the tracks. Verletzt - A lovely piano starts off your journey through this piece. It has a little bit of a Far East flavor to it throughout. A nice vocal choir is added as well as what sounds like a horn section or perhaps some orchestral elements. String plucks, crisp shakers and snaps all contribute to the drum section in this piece. It is an emotional track that is more of an expression piece in our ears. Enjoy. Autumn Night - The title says it all! Right off the bat we are treated to an airy wind sample, some high icy clicks and a warm cozy bass line and kick. Avi makes good use of an acoustic guitar in this one, having it take over during the breaks. It really gives that organic element that is portrayed throughout the rest of his other tracks on this EP. Autumn Night is a track that shows off Avis musicality yet again, but could easily be transferred to the dance floor. Herz aus Stein - Is this track really 11:30 long? You will not think so after giving it a go. We pressed repeat soon after it was over to be fair. This track seems to showcase Avis musicality. The intro of a busy cafe or subway tunnel really sets the mood at the beginning of the track. It is reintroduced throughout the piece, but done thoughtfully. The bass line is solid, drum work is simple, but extremely effective. The story told here is an emotional one, but do not forget that you can dance to it too. Memory Lane - Some fine use of the vocal sample in this one. This is the driving factor going down Memory Lane. It is soon joined by a great bass line that you can feel low, low in your chest. The pads are well thought out as they ebb in and out of the track, not to take focus off the vocal that is brought back in. Avi later switches the vocal to be part of the drum track, which works wonderfully and takes your focus into another direction, but will soon be brought back so you do not forget. My Room - Another barn burner in our opinion, My Room is going to destroy dance floors this year with its gritty vocal lick, well FXed synth stabs and dirty lead melody. It is a nice tech house track that is going to do well. We could hear this guy in Berlin around 3am and that is a good thing. Set Me Free - Here is a proper floor burner and we are hoping to hear this out in many of the clubs. Set Me Free is a nice deep house track that will have you singing along with it not long after it has started. The vocal work here is well played working with the different octaves, distorting it, looping it backwards and so on. It is the centre of the piece and all of this is done to give the listener the variety they need. Pads, synths and crisp hi-hats all work nicely for this one.
